Summary

To be useful in the design of an internationally standardised, chronologically-arranged, flow-pattered perinatal perinatal electronic patient record data-set, it became necessary to merge as much as possible of the multitude of data-sets relevant to Perinatal Medicine into a single resource document;  and then to try to analyse each item as described in

www.fawdry.info/eepd/01_ess/b_eprs/B06_Analysis.pdf

This initiative has led to

The EEPD Volume 4.  ”A Detailed Analysis in Chronological Order of all Perinatal Data Items so far documented”

Untangling Complexity

Due to the incompatible and confusing nature of some existing data requirements, the following areas were found to be particularly complex. What follows in each case is a flow-patterned set of questions and answers which minimises the work of data entry while at the same time meeting the needs of the different stakeholders.

1. Method of Birth www.fawdry.info/eepd/01_ess/b_eprs/B08/Method.pdf

2. Place of Birth www.fawdry.info/eepd/01_ess/b_eprs/B08/Place.pdf

This and similar problems are discussed in

http://www.fawdry.info/eepd/01_ess/b_eprs/B08_Difficult.pdf

Creating Volume 4.

This required the following:

1. Collecting as many datasets as possible. (EEPD Volume 3)

2. Making a “Cut and Paste” Version of each one; originally by personally re-typing, more recently using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) facilities.

3. Re-arranging every data item both chronologically, and by type. e.g. “Baby Data” separate from “Mother Data”, “Anaesthetic Data” separate from “Simple Pain Relief Data”, “Every Baby Data” separate from “Special Care Data” etc)

4. Adding each data item to the appropriate place in the full Resource document.

Introduction - Main Resource Document

As explained in the introduction to the EEPD Volume 5. (The Logical Prioritisation“ Dataset) that volume is by far the most important part of the whole EEPD project.

However it’s strength lies in the fact that it is totally based on this much larger document i.e. Volume 3. Perinatal Datasets and also on Volume 12. Proformas.

The main problems with all the medical data-sets so far known to me are that they are:

A.  Not chronologically arranged.

B.  No indication of flow-patterning. (i.e. When is a question not asked)

C.  No logical basis for including or excluding suggested data items.

D. No documentation when a suggested item is not included, as to why it has not been included?

Both Volume 4. (The Resource Document) and Volume 5 (“Logical Prioritisation” data set) are chronologically arranged and flow patterned.

Volume 5 uses the clear criteria of Workload/Cost + the value in Individual Patient Care as the basis for proposing a ”Logical Priority” set of draft Question and All Allowable Answer Options.

This Volume- Volume 4, also provides an opportunity to document all potential data items together with the potential cost of electronic data entry.

It also provides an opportunity to document the different ways each concept has been expressed and for extensive  comments to be made about each suggested item.

Feedback especially welcome.
